PROTECTING ISRAEL'S FRONTLINE COMMUNITIES
Take a peek inside our unique security work.
Armed and Dangerous: Man’s Best Friend as Deterrent — and Biological Weapon
The IDU dispatches security dogs to hilltops, farms, yishuvim and kibbutzim throughout Israel, and is committed to training both dogs and handlers to patrol communities and protect against terror attacks. Over its short history, the unit has succeeded in preventing more than a dozen terror infiltrations, saving countless lives while at the same time removing hostile enemy elements from the national arena.
All told, over 300 security dogs have been placed in vulnerable yishuvim and frontier communities across Israel, where they also assist in the capture of drug and weapon smugglers, augmenting the IDF’s efforts at patrolling the long and largely difficult-to-defend Egyptian and Jordanian borders. At its headquarters in Tapuach, the unit houses and trains an additional seven security dogs that are maintained at peak readiness for any contingency — or for the immediate use of knowledgeable security personnel.
The IDU’s dedicated tactical teams operate in rural settings to assist farmers and shepherds in protecting and recovering their agricultural assets, including livestock, machinery and crops. They work in tandem with the IDF, Israel Police and fire services to stop brushfires, prevent firebombings and quell the all-too-common mass disturbances that threaten to overrun the agricultural farmsteads and hilltops across Judea and Samaria. In urban areas, our teams deploy in careful coordination with law enforcement and community leaders to protect public areas and buildings during times of civil unrest.
The IDU also holds regular joint exercises with a number of elite IDF units to help train pilots and commandos in the field of Escape, Evasion and Survival (EES). In just the past year, we have teamed with, among others, the Air Force, Golani and Charuv, and have manifestly improved their capabilities in this all-important discipline.
In the aftermath of October 7th, the IDU was also active throughout the Gaza envelope, assisting in the search for missing persons for several difficult and grueling months. Our work helped determine who had been taken hostage, as well as bring the deceased to a proper Jewish burial.
